Signs Your Drains Might Be Clogged

  • Slow flushing toilets
  • water backing up in the shower
  • Water coming from the toilet base
  • Sewer water coming up from floor drains
  • Gurgling sinks, toilets, or showers
  • Stopped up kitchen or vanity sinks

There are a couple of ways to know if your drains need to be serviced. Issues usually become apparent when you can smell raw sewage from your shower or toilet. One of the most common signs that something is wrong with your lines is a gurgling sound after flushing the toilet. Gurgling lets you know that air is trapped somewhere within your sewer lines, most commonly caused by a blocked sewer.

Another sign that your sewer line is backed up is your tub/shower will retain water. After a stoppage occurs, the sewer lines start to fill up with all the waste that comes from your toilet, shower, kitchen sinks, or vanity sinks.

What Causes Clogged Drains?

There are a number of reasons why your drain lines might be clogged.

  • Flushing things that aren’t meant to be flushed
  • Roots Growing in Drain Lines
  • Old Rusted Piping
  • Bellies in the Lines
Broken and rusty cast iron pipes

Flushing wipes or Feminine Products

The most common way to backup your sewer line is by flushing things that are not supposed to be flushed. These items usually include feminine products and flushable wet wipes (these wipes claim to be flushable; however, they cause a lot of stoppages). You might be able to get away with flushing one or two of these items, but it only becomes a matter of time before you get a mess in your sewer lines and need to have it serviced.

Old Rusted Pipes

Sometimes your sewer line will be made of a cast-iron pipe. The problem with cast iron is that over the years, the inside will start to flake, rust, and crack. These imperfections will start to catch things like toilet paper and hair. Given enough time, a stoppage will likely occur; usually, the solution is to have the old sewer line replaced.

Roots Growing in Drain Lines

Roots can also be the culprit when experiencing drainage issues with your sewer line. Over the years, pipes can experience cracks or fractures that allow water to escape from the mainline. Once a nearby tree finds this new water source, it is only a matter of time before the roots start to grow bigger and wider until it's near impossible for anything to squeeze past.

Bellies in the Line

A belly happens when your sewer line starts to sag; having a belly in the line will cause the water to become stagnant. Stagnant water will prevent waste from flowing freely into the city's sewer. Again, this will result in your home's sewer line getting backed up. Sometimes a drain cleaning is enough to get your home back in working order, but it doesn't eliminate the entire problem. Our cables can only remove the existing blockage; it cannot fix the belly in the sewer line; that is usually only resolved by replacing the sewer line itself.

What Can I Do to Fix My Drains?

Sewer Line Repair Pvc Cleanout

Drainage issues can usually be resolved by a cable machine to clean the lines. Plumb Crazy Plumbers has all the equipment necessary to treat your residential home in Clearwater. Most home sewer lines extend to around 50-100ft; we are well equipped to clean these lines and restore flow to your home.

If you are still experiencing issues with your home draining properly, we can always send a camera down to check out what's causing the disruption. Depending on what we find, there will usually be a couple of options to fix the issue. If your pipes are looking good except for one spot with a crack, we can do a spot repair.

However, if your entire line is in bad condition, a general cleaning might not help. Replacing the sewer line might turn out to be the best option to prevent stoppages in the future.

"My home water softener replacement was to be a cinch. I planned it out to the final item....leaks occurring when exchanging the supply lines. I started my project early in the morning knowing I could reach a plumber to bail me out. Sure enough, the copper union from 23 years ago started to leak. I got on the phone and found P C Plumbers, Inc who came out in 2 hours. He was a third generation plumber, his name is Jacob. A great lad, very meticulous and efficient. So glad he took care of my repair. So thankful."
